San Jose Sharks find formula for success after two blowout losses

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:17:02 GMT

SAN JOSE – So much went wrong for the San Jose Sharks over the first three-plus weeks of the regular season that perhaps it was about time that they caught a lucky bounce.Nikita Okhotiuk’s shot from just inside the blue line toward the net went off the skate of Fabian Zetterlund and right to Tomas Hertl, who was in the perfect spot — right in front of the Edmonton Oilers net – to tap the puck past Stuart Skinner for his second goal of the season.“When you spend most of the time in (the other team’s defensive) zone, you can get any bounce,” Hertl said. “It was a little bit of a lucky bounce, but I think we deserved it.”Hertl’s second-period goal, plus Mackenzie Blackwood’s 39 saves in another stellar performance, helped lead the Sharks to a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday in a game between the NHL’s bottom two teams.Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored with 2:26 left in regulation time. But the Sharks killed a late penalty t...

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A U.N. report paints a stark picture of the devastation of the collapse of the Palestinian economy after a month of war and Israel’s near-total siege of Gaza. The gross domestic product shrank 4% in the West Bank and Gaza in the war’s first month, sending over 400,000 people into poverty — an economic impact unseen in the conflicts Syria and Ukraine, or any previous Israel-Hamas war, the U.N. said.Hamas militants, who rule Gaza, launched a surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7 killing over 1,400 people, mainly civilians, and kidnapping about 240 others. More than two-thirds of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million have fled their homes since Israel launched weeks of intense airstrikes followed by an ongoing ground operation, vowing to obliterate Hamas. UK economy escapes summer contraction, just about

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:17:02 GMT

The U.K. economy stagnated in the third quarter as the Bank of England’s interest rate increases hit the property market hard. Gross domestic product, which measures the total value of goods and services produced by the economy, was flat in the three months through September from the second quarter, the Office for National Statistics said on Friday. That was a slowdown from growth of 0.2 percent in the spring quarter but marginally better than market expectations for a 0.1 percent decline. The figures were dominated by a 1.6 drop in activity related to the property market, as mortgage lending retreated to pandemic-era levels in response to the highest interest rates in 15 years.Somewhat surprisingly, in the light of recent developments, there were no revisions to figures for the previous two quarters. As such, GDP at the end of September was 0.6 percent higher than a year earlier. The Bank’s latest forecasts for the U.K. economy, published last week, indicate that growth w...
