Bodyboarders rip through bioluminescent waves in California

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:03:47 GMT

Bioluminescence is not an unfamiliar sight in California, but when it's spotted, it's often aquatic creatures playing in the lit waters.Earlier this week, however, a photographer and videographer captured some humans getting in on the fun.In Huntington Beach, boogie boarders took to the ocean to catch some glowing waves, which are usually the result of plankton called Lingulodinium polyedra, often shortened to L. poly."It’s been a while since we’ve seen it here but the waves this time around were unbelievably bright," Patrick Coyne, who goes by @patrickc_la on Instagram, shared on the social media platform. "The beach was crowded with people enjoying the show and we all had a blast."Coyne, who has a talent for capturing stunning bioluminescent scenes, previously shared videos of dolphins frolicking in the waves off Newport Beach in 2020 and a school of mullet playing in bioluminescent water last year. Video captured by Instagram user @patrickc_la shows boogie boarders riding on biol...

Meadows loses bid to move Georgia case to federal court

By Marshall Cohen, Jeremy Herb and Tierney Sneed | CNNA federal judge on Friday rejected former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows’ bid to move his Georgia criminal case to federal court, a significant setback for Meadows and a troubling sign for former President Donald Trump.US District Judge Steve Jones found that the allegations against Meadows contained in the Fulton County district attorney’s indictment on election subversion charges were largely “related to political activities” and not to Meadows’ role as White House chief of staff.“The evidence before the Court overwhelmingly suggests that Meadows was not acting in his scope of executive branch duties during most of the Overt Acts alleged,” wrote Jones, a Barack Obama appointee. The Friday ruling has significant implications for the former president and his 18 co-defendants in the Fulton County district attorney’s sprawling racketeering case, though the judge said the ruling did not apply to the other defendants. CA lawmakers vote to limit hand-counting election ballots

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:03:47 GMT

By Adam Beam and Christina A. Cassidy | Associated PressSACRAMENTO — California lawmakers on Friday voted to limit when local governments can count election ballots by hand, a move aimed at a rural Northern California county that canceled its contract with Dominion Voting Systems amid unfounded allegations of fraud pushed by former Republican President Donald Trump and his allies.Shasta County’s board of supervisors, which is controlled by a conservative majority, voted in January to get rid of the voting machines it used to tabulate hand-marked ballots for its roughly 111,000 registered voters. County supervisors said there was a loss of public confidence in the machines from Dominion Voting Systems, a company at the center of discredited conspiracy theories since the 2020 presidential election. At the time, leaders did not have a plan for how the county would conduct future elections, including the March 2024 Republican presidential primary in delegate-rich California that co...

New Zealand discipline poor again as Rugby World Cup pools streak ends

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:03:47 GMT

PARIS (AP) — New Zealand’s great streak in Rugby World Cup pools is over. The All Blacks lost for the first time in 32 pool matches played, going back 36 years, when they fell to France 27-13 on the opening night of the Rugby World Cup on Friday. The uber-hyped match gave the tournament a brilliant liftoff but it doesn’t change much in the long run. France and New Zealand are expected to run through the rest of Pool A for probable quarterfinal clashes with No. 1-ranked Ireland or No. 2 South Africa. But the pool defeat was yet another unprecedented and unwanted piece of history suffered by New Zealand in this World Cup cycle. If the endgame is a record-extending fourth World Cup title then it will brush off the pool loss, but to that end the All Blacks still need to be a lot more physical and disciplined, issues that plagued them in a record loss to the Springboks two weeks ago.New Zealand enjoyed stunning starts to both halves at Stade de France. Mark Telea scored after 93...
